What is the best material for a media wall?

There is no single best material, because a media wall is five layers. CLS timber studs frame it, plywood behind the mount carries the screen, plasterboard and skim enclose it, Rockwool fills the cavity, and the visible finish is the only layer that moves the price, from nothing for painted plaster to £1,000 for veneer.

Is MDF or plasterboard better for a media wall?

Both, in different places. Plasterboard over CLS timber studwork, taped and skimmed, is the enclosure on nearly every build we do, because it takes paint flat and cheap and a plasterer can make it disappear into the existing wall. MDF earns its place where you want a sprayed, dead-flat painted edge that plaster will not hold, typically a slim recess reveal or a full painted surround. Either way the decision is about how the finish takes paint, not about strength, because neither board carries the screen.

The one place the board choice genuinely matters is moisture. A Dimplex Optimyst sits at £700 to £1,500 and builds its flame out of water vapour, and standard MDF swells where the air around it stays damp. Specify that fire and the surround wants moisture-resistant MDF, not the standard sheet a timber merchant hands you. Nobody selling the fire mentions it.

What material actually holds the television?

Plywood, and it is the only layer carrying real load. An 85-inch screen with its bracket puts 40 to 50kg on the fixings, and on a full-motion arm that weight acts on a lever standing clear of the wall. Plasterboard cannot hold it. We lay ply into the framework across the whole footprint of the mount so every bolt lands in solid timber, and on the larger screens that reinforcement is £100 to £200 on the quote.

This is the layer that fails on a badly built wall, and it fails out of sight. Cavity fixings in plasterboard hold fine on handover day and let go months later, bringing the board face with them. Once the wall is skimmed you cannot inspect it, so it is the easiest corner for a cheap quote to cut.

Which material decides what the wall costs?

The visible finish, and it is not close. Painted plaster is standard and adds nothing. Marble-effect porcelain adds £300 to £600. A slatted oak feature panel adds £400 to £800. Continuous veneered MDF adds £500 to £1,000. Every one of those sits on top of the same timber frame, the same ply and the same skimmed board underneath.

The larger material spend is the joinery either side, which the material guides never count as material at all. Open shelves both sides add £400 to £800. Cabinetry with doors and drawers is £1,200 to £2,000. Floor-to-ceiling library joinery is £2,000 to £3,500. Our published range runs £3,500 to £7,000, and that single decision covers most of the distance between the two ends of it.

Do I need fire-rated board, and what goes in the cavity?

Two different standards get confused here. Fire resistance is how long a whole construction holds a fire back, tested to BS 476-22 or EN 1364-1 and measured in minutes. Reaction to fire is a surface property, the Euroclass rating printed on the sheet. A non-loadbearing media wall inside a single dwelling is not a compartment wall and is no part of a stairway enclosure, so Approved Document B puts no resistance rating on it. What binds you instead is the clearance to combustible material the fire manufacturer prints in its own instructions, and the electrics, which have to satisfy Part P and are certified against BS 7671 by our NICEIC-registered electrician. All 350 needed the electrical certificate.

The material nobody lists is the one you hear. A media wall is a box 200 to 300mm deep in front of masonry with a soundbar and often a subwoofer inside it, and empty it drums on bass. Rockwool RWA45 packed into the framework stops that. In houses we add it for £150. In flats it costs £200 and stops being optional, because it cuts the bass reaching a neighbour by 60 to 70 per cent.

What sits behind the wall settles the fixing method before the finish settles anything. A single Crystal Palace street can hand you 1870s solid brick in lime mortar, Edwardian cavity work, and block-and-render in a newer flat, and the framing is set out differently for each. Our most-chosen Dulwich specification is slatted honey oak at 30mm with an 8mm shadow gap, which only reads correctly if the boarded ground behind it is dead flat first. A Clapham Common North Side wall in that spec, with a Solution Fires SLE140 and painted alcove cabinetry, came to £5,200 over ten days. A Bickley wall in marble-effect porcelain with a Dimplex Optimyst and matte black bookcases was £6,800 over thirteen.

In a flat the cavity stops being a preference. An Anerley Road build on a flat internal wall took Rockwool RWA45 plus mass-loaded vinyl behind the plasterboard on the party-wall side, and finished at £4,200. Leasehold flats need written consent from the freeholder, and where a live gas supply still reaches the old fireplace a Gas Safe engineer caps it at £150 to £250 before we frame anything, quoted apart from our work because the registration is not ours.
