What exactly is a media wall?
A media wall is a purpose-built false wall that houses your television, an electric fire, lighting and storage as a single integrated structure. It is framed in timber, boarded, plastered and finished so the screen, the flame and every cable sit flush inside the wall rather than on furniture standing in front of it.
How a media wall differs from a TV unit
The distinction is structural rather than decorative. A TV unit is furniture: it stands against a wall, holds a screen and some boxes, and leaves cables to be managed behind it. A media wall is part of the building. We frame it in timber, run the electrics inside the framework before anything is boarded, then plaster and finish it so it reads as an original architectural feature rather than something bought and positioned.
That difference is why a media wall changes how a room feels. Furniture sits in the room and takes up floor area. A media wall gives that floor area back, because the depth it needs is usually borrowed from a chimney breast or an alcove that was already dead space.
What sits inside the structure
Behind the plaster is a timber stud framework carrying reinforced plywood wherever load lands — the television mount above all else, since a large screen on a full-motion arm exerts real leverage. The TV recess is sized to the specific set so the bezel finishes flush. Below or beside it sits the electric fire recess, built with the ventilation clearance the manufacturer specifies.
The electrics are first-fixed before boarding: socket positions behind the screen, a fused spur for the fire, low-voltage runs for LED lighting, and conduit for HDMI and network cabling so a future upgrade does not mean opening the wall. Everything is certified to BS 7671 by our in-house NICEIC-approved electrician, and you receive that certificate at handover.
Why the term is British
Media wall is a UK and Irish term. In the United States the same structure is usually called a built-in entertainment centre, and American cost guides quote it against a different construction convention — stud walls at different centres, different fire regulations, different fireplace stock. Figures lifted from those guides do not transfer to a London project, which is why every number on this site traces back to our own published price list.
From our London projects
We have built more than 350 of these across South East and South West London since 2022, and the London-specific constraint is nearly always the chimney breast. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Dulwich, Clapham and Crystal Palace have a breast that projects far enough to give the depth a recessed screen and fire need, which is why so many of our installs cost nothing in floor area. Where the flue above is still live, Building Regulations Part J requires a ventilation gap behind the framework, and we leave one as a matter of course.
Our workshop is in Anerley, SE20, and the joinery is pre-built there because the cuts are cleaner and the spray finish is dust-free. It arrives on the final two days of the build and is assembled in the room.
